Beyond the Screen: Understanding Our Emotions in the Digital World

Today we want to talk about something that many of us experience but rarely discuss in depth—how we express our emotions in the digital world, specifically through social media.

Recently, I we upon a term that made me think deeply about how we share our feelings online: “sadfishing.” It is a trend where people post about their emotional struggles, often times exaggerating to hopes to gain attention or sympathy. This got us thinking—when people are posting that they are feeling ‘emo’ or sad on social media, are they asking for help, or just going with a trend?

Understanding Digital Expressions

When people share our low moments online, it can be a genuine call for support. People often do this because it is obviously comforting to receive encouraging words and to know that they are not alone. However, it’s important to discern when to take these expressions seriously, especially when they might signal a deeper issue. Additionally, an influx of highly emotional content on one’s social media feed will end up making the user feel worse, even though they are not the ones posting. As humans, our emotions very easily influenced by others, and it is important to surround yourself with people that make you feel good. This is where our community here at Arthentic Joy comes in—we want to provide a space where young people can learn to express themselves healthily and constructively, both online and offline.

Navigating Emotions

We’ve learned that understanding our digital expressions is not just about managing our social media presence; it’s also about understanding ourselves and our emotional well-being. In our workshops at Arthentic Joy, we explore how art can help us express our emotions more vividly and truthfully than any online post ever could. Art is a sanctuary for many because it is a place where one does not face restrictions or have to live up to certain expectations. We believe it can be that safe space for you too.

Let’s Talk and Support Each Other

If you or someone you know seems to be struggling or ‘sadfishing’ for responses, it might be a sign to reach out and offer a real-world connection. Sometimes, a simple, heartfelt conversation can have more of an impact than a hundred seemingly comforting online comments. Remember, it is often optimal to keep your feelings private or share them in a more personal setting where the nuances of your emotions can truly be felt and understood.

Creating a Supportive Digital Culture

At Arthentic Joy, we’re all about creating a culture where we uplift each other genuinely—beyond the likes and shares. By fostering a supportive community, both online and through our art programs, we help each other navigate the complexities of expressing emotions in today’s digital age.

Thank you for reading, and let’s continue to support each other and make our digital spaces a reflection of our genuine selves.
