Celebrating Black History Month with Beyond Educating Foundation

On Saturday, February 8th, ARThentic Joy was honored to participate in the “Empower Memphis Community Series” sponsored by Beyond Educating Foundation, a nonprofit based in Memphis, Tennessee, to demonstrated the positive impact of art on improving people’s wellbeing. As the guest speaker, Jacqueline Hu, the founder of ARThentic Joy, presented the scientific evidence behind art therapy while detailing her experience working with kids in the St. Louis area.

One interesting topic that Jacqueline focused on was about how the increased release of neurotransmitters including dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine while creating art can make us feel more rewarded, fulfilled, and focused. She also explained how creating art effects our bodies differently than playing video games or scrolling on social media, even though those activities might also release the same chemicals. Rather than passively reacting to social media posts and messaging, actions such as drawing and crafting further activate our neuromotor-sensory network and helps our brain develop higher intelligence.

We also raised more funds for the Child Mind Institute through sales of our original products. What an exciting event, and are so grateful for everyone who attended!
